Imagination Meets Collaboration

His approach and dedication was also helpful as we began work on our current project. At that time I was the only in-house character concept artist, I worked closely with Raf and the modelers in order to get the coverage we needed. While those early days were filled with high concept talks with our game and art directors, throughout the day Raf and I would spitball ideas about things we felt would be great to see in the game. Inspired by our talks I would do some blue pencil sketches over the weekend and share them with Raf the next week at work. A day later Raf would come in to work with a character maquette he’d made from those drawings. That collaboration and partnership helped us get the core of our game art started and also gave the team a glimpse into what would further be imagined. As we moved forward Raf would take even rough concepts at times and block them out in 3D so we could constantly evaluate the design in the engine to see how they held up. Through this collaboration we developed a very natural rhythm and short hand between the two of us which we have continued to foster and encourage between the members of our teams as our departments have grown over the years.

Something that has always left a big impression on me even more than the amazing projects I’ve been lucky enough to work on are the relationships and people I get to know along the way.  When it comes to this wonderfully crazy and absurd profession of creating and developing characters, many of which don’t exist in the real world, I’ve been fortunate to find a kinder spirit working side by side, day in and day out, over the past few years with Rafael Grassetti.
